International tax planning services

In all international business decisions, international tax aspects play an important role. Consulco, with its International Tax Department, belongs to the select few Cyprus firms with a solid international taxation practice. The Department provides services of the highest quality level in the country and has an outstanding track record in assisting clients (referred by major foreign law firms or otherwise acquired) in their requirements for Cypriot tax advice.

The members of our International Tax Department all have a long history of sophisticated representations of multinational companies in the field of international taxation.

Mergers and acquisitions

Consulco’s International Tax Department has been involved in a significant number of large M&A transactions or other major cross-border capital movements, including IPOs (Initial Public Offerings) on West- and East European stock exchanges.

Projects in which Consulco’s International Tax Department has been involved include:
  • The global reorganization of a US Fortune 200 Group;
  • Assistance of a Fortune 100 Group in the financing via Cyprus of a US$ 3.2 billion acquisition by one of the largest Groups in the world.
  • The first transfer in the history of Cyprus of the headquarters of a Scandinavian stock exchange quoted Group of companies to Cyprus.
Tax opinions

Consulco’s International Tax Department issues opinions on the Cypriot tax aspects of income generated by Cypriot companies involved in cross-border transactions on a regular basis.

Tax rulings

The International Tax Department is in continuous contact with the Cypriot authorities regarding developments in policy conducted by the Cypriot Inland Revenue, amongst others through negotiation of tax rulings.

The members of Consulco’s International Tax Department have the experience and capability to identify risks and exposures arising from the involvement of Cypriot companies in cross-border operations. At the same time they acknowledge that tax legislation is never drafted in such a way that it provides clarity about the tax aspects of every possible scenario. Each law has its ‘grey areas’.

When encountering such grey area, they usually advise clients to try to negotiate a ruling with the Cypriot tax authorities regarding the tax aspects of the income generated by the Cypriot company in question. Through that approach Consulco's International Tax Department has developed valuable experience in dealing with the Cypriot Inland Revenue and has gained valuable knowledge about the policy conducted by the Inland Revenue in many of the afore-mentioned grey areas.

Seminars and conferences

No Cypriot firm is as active in the field of organizing seminars as Consulco is. Consulco has organized seminars in many cities, including Amsterdam, Athens, Bucharest, Dubai, Luxembourg, Moscow, Stockholm and Warsaw. Rutger Kriek, head of Consulco’s International Tax Department, is country speaker on behalf of Cyprus during the global conferences of the International Bar Association (IBA).

Staying up to date and keeping you up to date

Consulco is subscriber to the world’s most prominent sources of information on international taxation. Furthermore, we closely follow the developments in Cypriot taxation and policy conducted by the Cypriot Revenue (we also refer to the sections ‘tax opinions’ and ‘tax rulings’ above). In addition, through its extensive global network of representatives, Consulco is on a regular basis updated on important tax developments in other countries.

Consulco also makes sure that its clients and other associates stay up to date as well. This is amongst others done through quarterly submission of the Consulco international tax newsletter. People who are interested in receiving our newsletter, can sign up for our newsletter on this website.
